HEADLANDS
We came here to avoid
the military display,
battleships massed in the Bay,
to look at the Arts Centre, not knowing
it overlooks a nuclear missile site,
now obsolete, but you can still see
the launch pads guarded
by camouflaged tracks.
The studios are all ex-army,
no privacy in the bathrooms
as in my worst nightmares,
a terrible aesthetic of sheet metal walls,
galvanised doors and floors,
steel cages bolted together.
It’s the absence of shelter,
the absence of lightness that aches –
yet, something stops us from moving on,
even when the coastline keeps
On calling us to the next point of view.
