"Tracing through the 3 different versions of my poem has been a pretty extraordinary and fascinating experience. Mostly, I'd just like to say thanks to those who devoted so much time and effort to it!
Two further thoughts occur. Firstly, that this particular poem must be rather a nightmare to translate as it has a lot of (rather uncharacteristic for me) slanginess in the language - to do with the kind of milieu it is trying to evoke - a low budget, second-rate kind of world where most things are at best semi-genuine. This sort of language - very compressed and idiomatic - must be tough to render into another language.
Secondly, I see just how many potential pitfalls there are in the process of translating. My German is not up to judging whether these versions of my poem might do this - but what a terrific project! “
